Folk was founded in 2001 by creative director Cathal McAteer who had a vision to create simple everyday clothing with subtle, innovative and sometimes playful detailing. Folk is a London based label with three of its own stores, as well as shop-in-shops in Liberty and Amsterdam store Cowboys 2 Catwalk. It is also stocked in over 200 of the best independent and department stores worldwide including Selfridges, Liberty and Harvey Nichols in London and Lane Crawford in Hong Kong. ETHOS Charles Eames, the iconic furniture designer once said “The details are not the details, they make the design”. This is a far more succinct way of defining Folk’s collections and design ethos than we could ever come up with. Folk is not a brand that is inspired by vintage clothing, a specific period in history or a particular muse and our designs do not try and re-create the wheel in terms of shapes and silhouettes. The design focus is on the combination of the quality of the fabrics and their fabrications, not being scared of using colour and our obsession with the minutiae of detail. It is perhaps the small design touches that the brand has become best known for and each collection works into old designs to improve them whilist constantly expanding and experimenting with new styles, fabrics, colours and details to maintain our innovative reputation. Folk started to create its mens and womens footwear collections in 2004 with the same ethos as the clothing range. The focus is on innovative design and material selection with much of the collection using veg tanned leathers which, although more expensive create a richness and texture not found in the more commonly used chrome dyed leather. The shoes are all hand made in a 60 year old family run factory in the north of Portugal which produces small production runs ensuring that the quality levels remain high. |
